If you’re struggling to take apart an ES (E27) lampholder, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common questions we receive from workshops, showrooms, and DIYers.

You’re likely in one of two situations:

  • a) You’ve purchased an ES lampholder that arrived fully assembled and you can’t open it, or
  • b) You’re troubleshooting a lampholder that’s already wired and you can’t get it apart.

Why won’t it open?

Most ES lampholders include a built‑in safety lock. This lock prevents the lampholder from coming apart when a bulb is unscrewed — an essential safety feature, but one that can be confusing if you’re not expecting it.

How to unlock an ES lampholder

I’ve put together a short video demonstrating how to release the safety mechanism on most E27 lampholders. Once you know where the locking tabs are and how to apply pressure, the process becomes straightforward.

Watch the video to see how to:

  • Identify the locking points
  • Release the safety catch
  • Separate the cap and body without damaging the lampholder
  • Continue your wiring or repair job with confidence

This simple technique works on the majority of standard ES lampholders used in workshops and pendant builds.

Watch my short video on how to undo these lampholders so you can take your wiring job forward!
