Shade Rings Explained: How to Secure a Lampshade to a Lampholder

A shade ring might be a small component, but it's essential for securing many lampshades to their lampholders.

Whether you're repairing a table lamp, restoring a chandelier or making a new pendant light, choosing the right shade ring helps ensure the shade fits securely and sits correctly.

At Lampfix, we supply shade rings for metal, plastic, Bakelite and specialist lampholders. Here's how to identify the right type.

What Is a Shade Ring?

A shade ring, sometimes called a locking ring, screws onto the threaded skirt of a compatible lampholder to hold a lampshade in place.

For a lampholder with a fully threaded skirt and no supporting shoulder, two shade rings are normally used — one below the shade's mounting ring and one above it, clamping the shade between them.

Some lampholders have a built-in shoulder that supports the shade. In these cases, a single locking ring may be sufficient.

Not every lampholder accepts shade rings. Smooth-skirt versions, for example, may have no external thread for a ring to screw onto.

Check the Lampshade Opening

Before choosing a shade ring, check the diameter of the lampshade's mounting opening.

Two common arrangements are:

  • Approximately 29–30mm: Often found on UK BC/B22 lampholders and certain smaller lampholder arrangements.

  • Approximately 40mm: Commonly used with European ES/E27 lampholders.

However, the bulb cap size alone doesn't determine the correct shade ring. The external thread, lampholder construction and shade opening must all be compatible.

The 8 Types of Shade Rings Available from Lampfix

1. Milled Metal ES Shade Rings

Our Milled Metal ES Shade Rings are designed for compatible Metalbrite ES/E27 lampholders.

Made from metal, they are available in several finishes, including brass, antique brass, nickel and others to complement the lampholder.

These are commonly used in decorative table lamps, pendants and wall lights where a metal lampholder and matching shade-fixing components are required.

Example: 05587 — Milled Metal ES Shade Ring, Brass.

2. Metal BC Shade Rings

Metal BC shade rings are used with compatible metal BC/B22 lampholders.

They are suitable for traditional bayonet-cap lighting arrangements where the lampholder's threaded section is designed to accept a shade ring.

Available finishes include brass, nickel and antique brass.

3. Plastic ES Shade Rings

Plastic ES shade rings are designed for compatible plastic or Bakelite ES/E27 lampholders with threaded skirts.

These provide a straightforward way to secure shades to many commonly used continental-style lampholders.

They are available in colours including black, white and gold.

4. Plastic SES Shade Rings

Our Plastic SES shade rings are intended for compatible smaller threaded-skirt lampholders, commonly used with SES/E14 bulbs.

These are particularly useful in decorative wall lights, chandeliers and smaller table lamps.

Although the bulb cap is smaller than ES/E27, always check the lampholder's external threaded skirt and the shade opening rather than selecting by bulb size alone.

Available colours include black, white and gold.

5. Plated Metal ES Shade Rings

Plated Metal ES shade rings are used with compatible plated metal ES/E27 lampholders.

They are particularly useful where the shade ring is visible and you want its finish to match the lampholder.

Our range includes brass-plated, nickel, copper, black nickel and other finishes.

These rings are generally intended for compatible E27 lampholders using a shade with an approximately 40mm mounting opening.

6. Plated Metal SES Shade Rings

Plated Metal SES shade rings are designed for compatible plated metal SES/E14 lampholders.

They offer a suitable metal-finish option for smaller decorative fittings where a plastic shade ring would not match the appearance of the lampholder.

Available finishes include brass plated, nickel and copper.

7. Spare Skirt for BC Bakelite Lampholders

Some traditional BC/B22 Bakelite lampholders have a removable skirt that also serves as part of the shade-retaining arrangement.

Our Spare Skirt for BC Lampholder (05133) is a replacement component for compatible BC Bakelite lampholders, including certain cordgrip and half-inch mounting types.

Unlike a conventional locking ring, this is a replacement skirt. The original lampholder's construction determines how the shade is supported and retained.

Check the lampholder type carefully before ordering, as spare skirts are not necessarily interchangeable between different models.

8. Metal G9 Shade Ring

G9 lampholders are often used in compact decorative fittings, including chandeliers and wall lights with small glass shades.

Our Metal G9 Shade Ring (05557) is designed for the compatible 05184 G9 10mm Lampholder.

This small metal ring screws onto the holder and can secure an appropriately sized glass shade.

Its dimensions are:

  • Outside diameter: 28mm

  • Inside diameter: 20mm

  • Height: 8mm

Because G9 lampholders come in different designs, this ring should not be assumed to fit every G9 holder.

What If Your Lampshade Has a Duplex Fitting?

Not every lampshade attaches directly to a lampholder using shade rings.

Some traditional lampshades have a duplex fitting, with a supporting ring positioned inside the shade.

For a table lamp, this type of shade is normally supported by a separate shade carrier fitted to a compatible upright lampholder.

For certain hanging pendants, a spider adaptor may be used instead.

These components perform a different job from ordinary shade locking rings. If your shade has a duplex fitting, check the required support arrangement before ordering rings.

Tips for Choosing and Fitting Shade Rings

Before ordering, check the following:

  • Lampholder type: Is it BC/B22, ES/E27, SES/E14 or G9?

  • Skirt design: Does it have a threaded skirt, an integral shoulder or a removable shade-retaining skirt?

  • Thread compatibility: Will the chosen locking ring actually screw onto the lampholder?

  • Shade opening: Does the shade's mounting hole fit the intended lampholder and ring arrangement?

  • Quantity: Does the assembly need one ring or two?

  • Shade support: Is the arrangement suitable for the shade's weight and construction?

Avoid overtightening shade rings, especially against glass or fragile shades. The shade should be firmly supported without placing excessive pressure on its mounting opening.

Always isolate the light fitting and allow the lamp to cool before working on its shade or lampholder. Electrical repairs and alterations should be carried out by a suitably competent person.
