Replacing a lampholder in an unusual light fitting? Sometimes the difficulty isn't finding a bulb — it's finding the component that holds it.

At Lampfix, we stock specialist lampholders for lighting repair, restoration and manufacture, including types that aren't always easy to find.

This guide covers several less common designs and the important details to check before ordering.

Festoon Lampholders

Festoon lampholders are often used in decorative lighting arrangements where individual lamps are positioned along a cable or suspended as part of a larger installation.

Our range includes an indoor BC festoon battenholder (05675) and porcelain E27 festoon lampholders (05740 and 05741).

The porcelain versions have side cable entries and are available in black and white. They can make an attractive choice for decorative festoon arrangements where the lampholder itself remains visible.

However, they are intended for indoor use and are not designed to support a lampshade.

When choosing a festoon lampholder, check the cable arrangement, electrical rating, suitable cable types, mechanical support and intended environment. Not every lampholder or decorative cable is suitable for every festoon installation.

GU10 Lampholders

GU10 lampholders are commonly found in spotlights, downlighters and task lighting.

We offer prewired GU10 lampholders, including versions with 120mm and 300mm cable tails. These can be useful when repairing a fitting with a damaged or overheated original lampholder.

We also supply a GU10 lampholder with a 10mm threaded mounting entry (06138), useful in certain fittings where the lampholder needs to attach to a threaded support rather than sit in a conventional retaining clip.

Check the mounting arrangement, cable connections, operating voltage and temperature suitability before choosing a replacement.

G9 Lampholders

G9 capsule lamps are found in many decorative fittings, including chandeliers, wall lights and contemporary table lamps.

Our G9 10mm lampholder (05184) includes a ceramic insert within a compact housing and can be mounted using a suitable 10mm threaded fixing.

A matching shade ring is available separately for applications where the lampholder is intended to support a compatible shade.

When replacing an existing G9 lampholder, check the mounting, dimensions, wiring arrangement and temperature rating. The components inside a decorative fitting can be quite closely packed.

G4 and GU5.3 Low-Voltage Lampholders

G4 and GU5.3 lampholders are used in low-voltage lighting, including some older decorative fittings and spotlights.

Our ceramic G4/GU5.3 lampholder range includes wired and unwired versions, with product codes 05181, 05182 and 05618.

These components can be useful when restoring a fitting with a damaged lampholder while retaining its original low-voltage arrangement.

Check the lamp's pin configuration and the individual holder's specifications before selecting a replacement. G4 and GU5.3 lamps have different pin spacings, so their compatibility should not be assumed.

If changing from halogen to LED, check the lamp's required voltage, whether it operates on AC or DC, and compatibility with the existing transformer or driver. The replacement also needs to fit physically and remain suitable for the fitting's thermal conditions.

Some older fittings may need a more substantial electrical refurbishment. Changing a low-voltage fitting to mains operation is an electrical redesign, not simply a lampholder swap, and requires competent assessment and appropriate testing.

Linear Double-Ended Lampholders

Linear double-ended lampholders are found in certain older floodlights and specialist fittings originally designed for linear halogen lamps.

Our range includes the 117mm Linear Double-Ended Lampholder (05789), which may be useful when replacing a damaged original component.

When identifying a replacement, check the lamp type, contact arrangement, fixing centres, electrical rating and temperature requirements.

LED replacements exist for some linear halogen applications, but compatibility depends on the complete fitting, including available space, thermal conditions and the characteristics of the replacement lamp.

What to Check Before Ordering

For an unfamiliar lampholder, the most useful details are:

  • Lamp fitting: GU10, G9, G4, GU5.3, E27 or another type.

  • Electrical specification: Supply voltage, current and any transformer or driver requirements.

  • Mounting: Threaded entry, fixing bracket, retaining clip or other arrangement.

  • Dimensions: Overall size, fixing centres and available space.

  • Installation conditions: Cable connections, temperature and indoor or outdoor suitability.

Where the fitting is damaged, the condition of the surrounding wiring and electrical components should also be checked.

Need Help Identifying a Specialist Lampholder?

Some replacement lampholders look very similar but differ in important details.

If you can't identify the original part, send us a photograph of the lampholder and its mounting arrangement, along with any measurements or markings you can find.

We'll help you identify a suitable part from our range or suggest a practical alternative where possible.

Electrical safety: Replacement and alteration work must be appropriate for the complete light fitting. Electrical installation, modifications and testing should be carried out by a suitably competent person.
