Choosing the right ceiling hook, mounting bracket or chandelier rose starts with understanding its Safe Working Load.

Ceiling Hooks & Chandelier Suspension: Load Ratings Explained

When hanging a chandelier or heavy light fitting, it's important to choose components that can safely support its weight.

At Lampfix, we supply ceiling hook plates, chandelier mounting brackets, decorative chandelier roses and complete suspension kits with different load ratings.

This guide compares the main options, explains what their ratings mean and highlights what else needs checking before installation.

What Does Safe Working Load (SWL) Mean?

Safe Working Load, usually abbreviated to SWL, is the maximum working load specified for a particular component under its rated conditions.

For example, a ceiling hook plate with a stated SWL of 40kg has a component rating of 40kg.

However, this does not mean it can safely support 40kg when fixed to any ceiling.

The strength of the complete installation also depends on the ceiling structure, the fixings used, the other suspension components and how everything is connected.

The ratings below relate to individual Lampfix products, not to an installed chandelier suspension system.

Ceiling Hook Plate Load Comparison

Ceiling hook plates provide a fixing point from which a chandelier, pendant or other suitable light fitting can be suspended.

Our range includes decorative brass plates and heavy-duty steel mounting brackets.

ProductSafe Working Load
21kg Ceiling Hook Plate (05061)21kg
25kg Heavy Duty Ceiling Hook Plate (05818)25kg
26kg Heavy Duty Large Brass Ceiling Hook Plate26kg
40kg Heavy Duty Ceiling Hook Plate (06067)40kg
100kg Chandelier Mounting Bracket (06164)100kg

These values are the published ratings for the individual components. They do not establish the capacity of the fixings or ceiling structure.

The 21kg plate is available in decorative finishes, while the 25kg and 40kg steel plates offer compact mounting options that can be concealed by suitable ceiling cups.

Our 26kg heavy-duty brass hook plate provides a larger decorative option, while the 100kg chandelier mounting bracket is intended for more substantial suspension requirements.

The 100kg bracket has a certified component load rating, with supporting test documentation available on its product page.

When selecting a hook plate, check its dimensions, fixing-hole arrangement, shape and compatibility with the other suspension components, as well as its stated load rating.

Chandelier Rose Load Comparison

A chandelier rose is the decorative assembly that conceals the ceiling fixing and provides a connection to the chandelier's suspension chain or other suitable support.

Our cast-brass chandelier roses use a suspension bar with a loop at each end. The upper loop connects to a suitable ceiling hook, while the lower loop connects to the light fitting's suspension arrangement.

The decorative cup slides over the suspension bar to conceal the ceiling fixing.

Chandelier RoseSafe Working Load
Hampstead Chandelier Rose (05429)75kg
Chelsea Chandelier Rose (05432)75kg
Kensington Chandelier Rose (05479)75kg
Kensington Chandelier Rose 100kg (06075)100kg

The Hampstead, Chelsea and Kensington roses offer different cup dimensions and proportions to suit different chandelier styles and sizes.

The 100kg Kensington is a separate heavier-duty option.

Remember that the chandelier rose's rating is not necessarily the rating of the complete installation.

For example, a 75kg chandelier rose connected to a 25kg ceiling hook plate cannot be treated as a 75kg suspension system.

The lower-rated component limits the arrangement, and the ceiling fixings or other connections may impose additional limits.

Choosing Compatible Suspension Components

When combining a chandelier rose with a separate hook plate, there are two important checks.

1. Load rating

Every load-bearing component must be suitable for its intended load, including the hook plate, chandelier rose, chain and connecting links.

The lowest-rated component sets an upper limit, but it does not by itself establish the safe capacity of the complete assembled installation.

2. Physical compatibility

The upper loop of the chandelier rose must engage properly with the ceiling hook.

The hook plate must also fit within the available space beneath the decorative cup, without obstructing the suspension bar or preventing the cover from being secured correctly.

Different hook plates and chandelier roses are not necessarily interchangeable simply because their load ratings are suitable.

If you're replacing an existing ceiling fixing or combining separately purchased parts, check the product dimensions and intended connection before ordering.

Complete Chandelier Suspension Kits

If you need several suspension components, a complete kit may be a more convenient starting point.

Lampfix offers options including:

Depending on the kit, components may include a decorative ceiling assembly, mounting bracket, suspension chain and connecting links.

Buying a kit can make it easier to obtain components intended to be used together.

However, the ceiling structure and installation fixings still need to be assessed separately. A kit's stated rating is not a guarantee that it can safely carry that weight in every installation.

What Else Should You Check Before Hanging a Chandelier?

Before selecting a suspension arrangement, establish the following:

  1. The complete weight of the light fitting. Include all components that will be suspended, such as glass shades, drops, lamps and decorative fittings.

  2. The ceiling structure. Confirm that there is a suitable structural fixing point capable of carrying the load. Plasterboard alone should not be assumed to provide adequate support.

  3. The mounting fixings. Screws, bolts, anchors and their installation must be suitable for the actual ceiling material and loading conditions.

  4. The suspension components. Check the ratings and condition of all load-bearing parts, not just the ceiling hook.

  5. The connections. Ensure the hook, loops, chain and joining links are physically compatible and cannot become accidentally disconnected under normal use.

  6. The electrical installation. The light fitting must be safely wired, with suitable earthing and cable arrangements where required. Electrical cable must not be used to support a load unless the complete suspension system is specifically designed and rated for that purpose.

For substantial chandeliers, uncertain ceiling construction or unusual installations, the support arrangement should be assessed by a suitably competent professional before installation.

Lampfix supplies suspension components but does not undertake site installation or structural assessments.

Need Help Choosing a Ceiling Hook or Chandelier Rose?

If you're trying to match an existing chandelier fixing, or need to identify suitable components for a new light fitting, we're happy to help.

Send us the details of what you're trying to suspend, including the approximate weight, photographs of the existing suspension arrangement and any relevant dimensions.

We can help identify suitable products from our range and explain their specifications and compatibility.

The ceiling structure, fixings and completed installation will still need to be assessed by the person responsible for the installation.
