Catenary lighting is a useful way to support lighting across a space where chain suspension isn't suitable.
Instead of suspending each fitting directly from a ceiling point, a catenary arrangement uses a steel wire between suitable fixing points. The wire provides mechanical support for the lighting arrangement.
You'll find catenary systems used in specialist pendant installations, decorative lighting, restoration work and some festoon-lighting applications.
At Lampfix, we stock a selection of catenary wires, brass fittings, end holders and other specialist components. If you're replacing an existing part or putting together a new arrangement, we can help identify the components you need.
What does catenary mean?
The word catenary comes from the Latin catena, meaning chain.
When a chain hangs freely between two points, its weight creates a natural curve called a catenary.
The same principle helps explain how a suspended wire behaves. Even when tensioned, a wire carrying its own weight or supporting lighting will have some degree of sag.
The important consideration is that the wire and its fixing points must be suitable for the loads involved.
When is catenary lighting useful?
Catenary arrangements can be useful in several situations.
Specialist pendant lighting
Where a fitting needs to be positioned away from a conventional ceiling suspension point, a properly designed catenary system may provide an alternative way of supporting it.
Decorative interiors
Catenary arrangements can form part of lighting installations in restaurants, studios, converted buildings and other interiors where a suspended wire suits the design.
Festoon and outdoor lighting
Support wires are sometimes used for festoon lighting and other suspended outdoor arrangements. These require components and fixings suitable for the particular conditions and loads involved.
Repairing existing installations
Sometimes the job is much simpler: an existing catenary arrangement needs a replacement wire, end holder, clamp or another specialist component.
This is particularly relevant to lighting restorers and maintenance professionals who need to match existing parts.
In every case, catenary is one possible solution, not automatically the right one. The span, loads, fixing structure and intended use determine whether it's appropriate.
Understanding the main catenary components
Different installations use different arrangements, so the parts below shouldn't be treated as a universal kit.
You can browse the Lampfix catenary range to see the available components.
Catenary ceiling rose — 107mm
Our 107mm Catenary Ceiling Rose is a solid-brass ceiling component designed for catenary lighting arrangements.
It has a central entry for the suspension wire and a separate offset cable entry with an internal cable grip.
This allows the electrical cable and supporting wire to be arranged discreetly.
As with any suspension arrangement, the mounting and structural support must be suitable for the intended load.
Conical and cylindrical stop end holders
Stop end holders provide a secure termination for the wire at the end of an appropriate catenary arrangement.
Lampfix stocks both conical and cylindrical versions in solid brass.
The choice will often come down to the appearance required, along with the dimensions and compatibility of the other components.

Stop end inserts
The stop end insert is an internal component used with a suitable stop end holder.
It's important to establish that the insert, holder and wire are compatible rather than selecting them by appearance alone.
Self-blocking clamps
A self-blocking clamp is a wire-gripping component used in suitable suspension arrangements.
The correct clamp depends on the wire and the application. Its name alone doesn't establish its load capacity or whether it is suitable for tensioning an installation.
Loop end connectors
Loop end connectors are used to form wire terminations in arrangements designed for them.
Check the required wire diameter, connection method and mechanical suitability before ordering.
Steel catenary wire
We stock steel catenary wire, including 1.2mm-diameter products available in different lengths.
These can be useful when replacing an existing wire or sourcing material for a compatible arrangement.
3mm stainless steel wire
We also offer 3mm stainless steel wire.
This is a different product from our smaller-diameter catenary wire. It shouldn't be assumed that the same clamps, holders or inserts will fit both.
Wire selection must be based on the required specification, not simply on choosing the largest diameter available.
What should you check before ordering?
If you're identifying components for a catenary lighting job, there are a few things worth establishing first.
1. Is it a new installation or a repair?
For an existing system, photographs of the original parts can be particularly useful.
2. What wire is being used?
Check the diameter and material, along with any available manufacturer information.
3. What are the fitting dimensions?
Measure the existing holders, connections and fixing arrangements where relevant.
4. Is the installation indoors or outdoors?
The environment affects component selection, including corrosion resistance and other environmental requirements.
5. What does the system need to support?
The span, fittings, total loads, tension and suitable structural fixing points need to be established by the person responsible for the installation.
These details help distinguish a straightforward replacement-parts enquiry from an installation that requires a more involved design assessment.
A note on installation and safety
A catenary arrangement places forces on its fixing points, not just downward loads.
The supporting structure, anchorages, wire, terminations and other load-bearing components must be suitable for the intended installation.
Electrical cables and their connections also need to be correctly supported and protected. The mechanical support wire should not be confused with the electrical supply cable.
Work involving overhead suspension and electrical installations should be designed and carried out by appropriately competent people.
Lampfix can help identify and supply specialist components, but we do not undertake structural design, site installation or certification of complete catenary systems.
Need help identifying a catenary component?
Sometimes the difficult part of a lighting job isn't the installation itself. It's finding the right replacement fitting or working out which components go together.
That's where Lampfix can help.
We supply specialist lighting components in small quantities and mixed orders, so you can obtain the parts you need without purchasing unnecessary packs.
If you're unsure what to order, send us an enquiry with:
A photograph or drawing of the existing arrangement
The component or components you're looking for
Relevant dimensions, particularly wire diameter
The quantity and finish required
Any available specification or compatibility information
We'll help identify the appropriate Lampfix products or a possible alternative where we can. If the information isn't sufficient to establish compatibility, we'll explain what else is needed.
Unusual lighting parts are what Lampfix is built for. We combine specialist stock with practical product knowledge, helpful people and dependable supply.
