    What is this cable?

This cable is a common lighting flex.

Used on table lamps, floor lamps and pendant lights, this cable has 3 inner cores and an outer PVC sheath. This makes it double insulated.

Each core has 24 copper strands, each of 0.2mm diameter, giving a total cross-sectional area of 0.75mm².  Each core has a coloured PVC insulation. (Brown for Live, Blue for Neutral, Green/Yellow for Earth).

2183Y is the industry code for this cable type.

2183Y flex is thinner than 3183Y flex.  This makes it suitable for lighting, where space is often limited. For example, this cable can run through hollow all thread.

(By contrast 3183Y suits heavy-use machinery such as lawn mowers, and vacuum cleaners.  This is because of its extra physical strength).

This cable carries up to 6A (1440 Watts or 1.44 kW at 240 Volts).

The industry standard flex size for new pendants, table and floor lamps is 0.75mm².

If you are rewiring an antique and the cable holes are narrow, I recommend using 3 core 0.5mm instead.  While it is not industry standard, it is thinner, can take up to to 720 Watts at 240 Volts and is more flexible.  This is legal because antiques are not new to the market.

This product comes in a range of colours.

About the Gold option: Goes well with polished brass finish light fittings.  Slim and flexible, this cable is ideal for wiring light fittings.

About the Antique Gold option:  Old Gold (or Antique Gold), is the closest match with an old brass or wooden fitting.  Flexible and thin this cable is a pleasure to work with.

    This flex works with:

    - all our lampholders

    - all our plugs

What is this cable good for?

    The following scenarios:

    • to upgrade existing 0.75mm cable on a light fitting

    • use with other pendant light parts - ceiling rose and lampholder

    • making table lamps or pendant lights

Here is an article where you can learn more about making your own pendant light.

What is this cable not good for?

    The following scenarios:

    • to rewire an antique where cable passages are too narrow. You should select a 0.5mm version instead.

    • Don't use on heavy-use machinery i.e. lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners, hedge trimmers. Use 3183Y instead.
